A true gem in the Southern Lakes Crown
Moke Lake: Queenstown's Hidden Gem (and Why You Need to See It)

Queenstown, New Zealand, is synonymous with adventure. Bungy jumping, jet boating, white-water rafting...the adrenaline never stops. But what if you crave a moment of serenity amidst the thrills? What if you want to escape the crowds and discover a place of breathtaking natural beauty that feels truly yours?
Then you need to head to Moke Lake.
Just a short, scenic 15-20 minute drive from the heart of Queenstown, Moke Lake feels like another world. Nestled amongst towering mountains and rolling farmland, this horseshoe-shaped lake offers a tranquil escape that will rejuvenate your soul. It's a hidden gem, less frequented than the more famous lakes in the area, making it perfect for those seeking peace and quiet.
Why Moke Lake is So Special:
- Unspoiled Beauty: Forget concrete paths and bustling cafes. Moke Lake is surrounded by raw, natural beauty. The deep blue of the water contrasts beautifully with the golden tussock grasslands and the dramatic peaks of the surrounding mountains. Reflections on a calm day are truly magical.
- Easy Access, Big Reward: Unlike some of New Zealand's more remote beauty spots, Moke Lake is surprisingly accessible. The drive from Queenstown is straightforward, primarily on sealed roads (though the final section is gravel, it's generally well-maintained).
- Activities for Everyone: Whether you're an active adventurer or a peace-seeking soul, Moke Lake has something to offer:
- Hiking: The Moke Lake Loop Track is a fantastic option. This easy to moderate, 2-3 hour loop circles the entire lake, offering stunning views from every angle. It's mostly flat, with a few gentle inclines, making it suitable for most fitness levels.
- Mountain Biking: The same loop track is also popular with mountain bikers. The terrain is varied, offering a fun and challenging ride.
- Kayaking & Paddleboarding: Bring your own kayak or stand-up paddleboard and explore the calm waters of the lake. It's an incredibly peaceful way to experience the scenery. (Note: Currently, there are no rental facilities directly at Moke Lake, so you'll need your own gear).
- Camping: The Department of Conservation (DOC) manages a campsite at Moke Lake. It's a basic, scenic campsite – the perfect place to wake up to the sound of birdsong and stunning lake views. Bookings are essential, especially during peak season.
- Photography: Moke Lake is a photographer's dream. The ever-changing light, the reflections, and the dramatic landscape provide endless opportunities for stunning shots. Sunrise and sunset are particularly spectacular.
- Picnicking: Simply pack a lunch, find a spot along the lakeshore, and soak in the serenity.
- Swimming: Take a refreshing dip on a warm day! The water is clean and inviting.
- Stargazing: Away from the light pollution of Queenstown, Moke Lake offers incredible stargazing opportunities. On a clear night, the Milky Way is truly breathtaking.
